A Season of Change, A Commitment to Quality –
Discover Our 2024 Vintage
This past winter, a severe freeze impacted vineyards across the Okanagan Valley, significantly affecting the 2024 harvest. While our vines recover for future seasons, we’ve carefully sourced high-quality grapes—mainly from the Pacific Northwest—to ensure Sumac Ridge wines remain as fresh, flavourful, and easy-drinking as ever.
Our winemaking team has dedicated countless hours, skill, and care to crafting wines that stay true to the Sumac Ridge style—uncomplicated, unpretentious, and made to be shared with family and friends.
We’re proud to bring you this special vintage and can’t wait for you to enjoy it.
Q&A
How did the freeze impact the vineyards?
In January 2024, the Okanagan experienced an extreme cold snap, with temperatures dropping below -20°C for an extended period. This led to significant and widespread damage to the vines, resulting in the loss of grape crops across the region.
Is this only impacting Sumac Ridge or also all other BC wines?
Frost-related challenges have affected the majority of BC wineries, leading to a 90% loss in grape production across the region in 2024.
What does this mean for Sumac Ridge wines this year?
To help sustain and protect BC’s wine industry, the provincial government introduced a temporary Vintage Replacement program. This initiative gave wineries the flexibility to adapt sourcing for the 2024 vintage.
After careful consideration, we decided that participating in this program was the best way to ensure Sumac Ridge wines remain available for our customers—without compromising on the quality and easy-drinking style you know and love.
Is the change temporary?
Absolutely. This is a short-term solution while our vineyards recover. The good news? We expect to be back to crafting wines from our own Okanagan vines within the next year and a half, as we replant and restore them to full health.
While we wait for the next harvest, we’re proud to share our 2024 release, which stays true to the fresh, flavourful, and easygoing Sumac Ridge style.
How has the quality of the wines been maintained?
The freeze may have changed our path, but our commitment to quality hasn’t wavered. Our winemaking team has put in countless hours to ensure every sip is just as delicious as ever.
They worked closely with trusted growers and producers to source top-quality grapes that meet—or even exceed—the taste and standards of past vintages. Their meticulous care and expertise have helped craft a limited release that remains true to the Sumac Ridge signature style.
How were the choices of sourcing made for the 2024 releases?
We know you have a special connection to our wines. As we navigated this vintage, our priority was staying true to the wines you love.
To achieve this, we carefully selected premium grapes primarily from the Pacific Northwest, working with reputable growers and producers who share our commitment to exceptional winemaking. These regions produce varietals that closely match those we grow in BC, allowing us to maintain the familiar flavour and character of Sumac Ridge wines.
From there, it was all about the magic of our winemakers—who dedicated themselves to ensuring that every bottle delivers the same fresh, flavourful, and easy-drinking experience.
